Why Is Your VPN Slow? Seven Causes You Can Actually Fix
A slow VPN usually has one of a few fixable causes. How to tell whether it's server distance, protocol, your Wi-Fi, or something else.
Some of a VPN’s speed cost is simply physics. Your traffic gets encrypted and takes a detour through another server before it reaches the site you asked for, and that round trip takes time. There is no universal percentage that counts as normal: distance, congestion, protocol, device, and the original connection all affect the result. A large, repeatable difference between like-for-like tests is a reason to investigate.
Measure before you blame the VPN
Start by finding out whether the tunnel is actually the problem. Run a speed test with the VPN off and note the number, then run the same test again with the VPN on and connected to the same server, within a minute or two. Network speed swings throughout the day, so testing the two states an hour apart tells you nothing useful.
Use the same testing site for both runs, and if you can, plug into Ethernet for the measurement so a shaky wireless signal doesn’t muddy the comparison. You want to change one thing at a time, and the only thing changing here should be the VPN.
If both results are slow, your Wi-Fi or your internet plan is the bottleneck and the VPN is just along for the ride. If the VPN result is dramatically lower than the off result, then you have a genuine VPN issue worth chasing, and the rest of this is for you.
Server distance and crowding
The biggest lever is which server you pick. A VPN routes everything through the server you connect to, so choosing one on another continent adds real latency to every request no matter how fast your own connection is. Unless you need to appear in a specific country, connect to the nearest server the app offers.
Server load also matters. A server that feels fine at 8am can crawl at 9pm when everyone in the region is streaming through it. If a nearby server feels sluggish, switch to a neighboring one in the same city or country. It is worth comparing nearby options because their load and routing can differ.
The protocol setting matters most
If you change only one thing, change the protocol. Most VPN apps let you pick how the tunnel is built, and the gap between the options is large. Modern WireGuard-style protocols can reduce overhead compared with older OpenVPN-over-TCP options, but the result varies by network, device, and implementation.
Open your VPN app’s settings, find the protocol or connection type, and choose the modern option if one is listed, then compare it with the default using the same server and test conditions.
When it’s your Wi-Fi, not the tunnel
A weak Wi-Fi signal caps your speed long before encryption does. If your Mac is stuck on a crowded 2.4GHz band, or you’re two rooms and a wall away from the router, that link is your ceiling and no VPN setting will raise it.

Throttling, multi-hop, and busy connections
Three smaller causes account for most of what’s left, in rough order of how often they bite:
- Network routing or traffic management: a VPN changes the path traffic takes. That can occasionally change performance in either direction, but a faster result is not guaranteed and does not prove why the original path was slower.
- Multi-hop or double protection: features that route you through more than one server add distance and processing, which can reduce speed. Use them only when that routing choice matches your needs.
- Background activity: a cloud sync, a system update, or a backup running quietly eats bandwidth whether the VPN is on or not. Check what’s uploading before you blame the tunnel.
When to stop chasing speed
At some point the last few percent isn’t worth your evening. If you’re already getting 200Mbps or more through the tunnel, streaming, calls, and downloads will all feel instant, and squeezing out another 30Mbps changes nothing you can actually perceive. A speed test reports a number; your real experience is whether pages load and video doesn’t buffer.
It also helps to know which number you care about. Downloads and streaming depend on throughput, the raw megabits, while calls and gaming care far more about latency, the delay on each round trip. A nearby server keeps latency low even when the headline speed dips, so if voice and video calls feel fine, a lower number on the test is nothing to fix.
Fix the protocol, pick a near and quiet server, and confirm your Wi-Fi is healthy, and you’ve handled the causes that matter. If what a VPN actually hides matters more to you than raw speed, that’s a separate question worth reading about.
