What Your IP Address Actually Reveals About You
A plain account of what an IP address tells a website — rough location, your provider, network type — and what nobody gets without legal process.
Your IP address tells every server you connect to roughly where you are, which company provides your internet, and what kind of connection you’re on. It does not tell a website your name, your street address, or what you did on any other site. The gap between those two lists is where nearly all the confusion about IP addresses lives.
What anyone can read from your IP
Approximate location comes first, and the word approximate is doing real work. No part of an IP address encodes a position. Geolocation is a lookup: companies build databases mapping address ranges to places using registration records, routing data, and whatever a provider publishes about where its equipment sits. What a site sees, then, is the neighborhood of your ISP’s infrastructure rather than your home. On home broadband that’s often the right city and sometimes a city an hour away, whichever regional hub your traffic passes through. On mobile data it can be further off still, because carriers route wide areas through a small number of gateways.
Second, your provider’s name. Address ranges are allocated to organizations and those allocations are public, so any site can look up Comcast, Vodafone, a university, or a corporate network without needing permission from anyone.
Third, and least discussed, the kind of network you’re on. The same public records show whether an address belongs to a residential pool, a mobile carrier, or a data center, and that last category covers nearly every VPN and cloud server. Sites act on this. A residential address gets waved through; a data-center address gets a CAPTCHA, a tighter rate limit, an extra verification step, or a flat refusal. What it takes to get more
The movie version, where someone types your IP into a terminal and your address appears on screen, is not how any of this works. Only your internet provider holds the record that ties an address at a given moment to a paying subscriber, and that record sits behind legal process: a subpoena, a court order, a law enforcement request with actual authority behind it. A website, an ad network, or a stranger in a game lobby cannot get it by asking.
There is an honest exception, and it matters far more day to day. Everything you’re logged into already knows who you are, and your IP address has nothing to do with it. Your email provider, your bank, and every social account identified you at sign-in. Cookies and browser fingerprinting carry that recognition into sites you never logged into at all. Why it still matters
None of that makes an IP address harmless. It is persistent enough to work as an identifier and it is visible to every server you touch, and that combination is worth taking seriously.

Static, dynamic, IPv4 and IPv6
Most home connections get a dynamic address, meaning the ISP is free to reassign it after a router reboot, a lease expiry, or a network change. In practice it often stays put for weeks, so dynamic gives you less separation than the word suggests. Business lines usually pay for a static address, which never changes and is therefore a stable, long-lived identifier.
IPv6 changes one practical detail. Because IPv4 addresses are scarce, many households share a single public address through carrier-grade NAT, which blurs individual users together. IPv6 has enough addresses that every device can hold its own, which is cleaner for networks and marginally worse for you, and that’s why macOS and other systems rotate temporary IPv6 addresses by default. How to change what they see
The direct answer is a VPN. It routes your traffic through a server, so the sites you visit see that server’s address and its location instead of yours, while your ISP sees an encrypted connection and not the destinations behind it. The limits are the familiar ones. Logins still identify you. Fingerprinting still recognizes your browser.
